With the bolt oil drain plug bolt safely back in place slide the drain bucket towards the front of the bike and position it relatively under the oil filter which is located on the front of the engine as shown here).

Using a wrench suitable for removing the oil filter, remove the filter and dispose of it properly. Take the new filter using some of your new oil pour some oil into the filter until it reaches the top. I always preload the filter, you should too. After a minute or two you may need to pour a little more oil into the filter as it will soak in to the filter as shown here.

Take the new filter and screw it back in the same place where the old filter came from. The service manual recommends tightening two full turns after the gasket makes contact with the seal ring. The Suzuki factory filter has an "O" ring seal which is usually thicker than other filters. 1 1/2 to 2 turns is probably sufficient for most non-Suzuki filters.

Once the new filter is in place remove the oil filler cap and carefully clean around it with a clean rag to prevent debris from entering. Then using an appropriate funnel add the new oil. Service manual says that you need to add 4.5 US qt if you changed the filter. When I preload the filter I usually add 4qts even and it brings it to the correct level.

Once you have added the oil screw the cap back on the oil filler hole and then start the bike and let it run for 20-30 seconds while watching the oil pressure light. After about 30 seconds turn the bike off and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back to the pan.

Get the bike level (now a bike jack is handy) and check the fluid level site glass and make sure that the oil is between the low and full marks as depicted in this picture. If needed add enough oil to get to the full mark but add it slowly, a little bit is all that is required to go from low to full.

Once full, start the bike up and check for leaks around the drain plug and the oil filter. If none are found replace the chrome cover, wipe off the smudge marks, pat yourself on the back and go for a ride.
