Next comes hooking up the signal wire, which comes out of the tach and needs to hook to the negative terminal of one of the ignition coils. I used the coil on the left side of the bike since it looked easier to get too (and I had that side off anyway).

On my 2001 model, and my brothers 1999 model, the wiring was the same, an orange and white wire is the positive and the white wire towards the inside of the frame is the negative wire. The white wire is the one we want to tap into.

Use some alcohol to clean the wires off since they are probably grimy and splice back, but don't cut, the white wire and then wire and solder the green wire from the tach to it. Once cooled apply a sufficient quantity of black electricians tape to the splice and bundle it back up.

Next came the mounting. The bracket that came with the tach looks like crap so I didn't want to use it. Instead I bought a small billet mount (Rodney's Cycle Little Rock, AR $12 bucks) and used that. Total cost for the mount, chrome nut & bolt and little chrome plug for the end of the allen bolt was about $14.
